Allison Hoyt is a Certified Nurse-Midwife with the Midwifery Care Associates group at  Simmonds, Martin & Helmbrecht of Advantia and is currently practicing at the Damascus, Frederick, and Gaithersburg locations, outside of Washington, D.C. To her new role, Allison brings seven years of experience as a postpartum nurse, as well as an educational background in Nurse-Midwifery and Women’s Health/Gender-Related Nurse Practitioner.

What led you to become a Certified Nurse-Midwife?

Prior to nursing, I was a mining engineer at an underground mine, which was really exciting—getting to go where no other people had gone before. But I felt that I was missing something. I didn’t feel like I was making much of a difference. I’m very extroverted. I like being around people, so I wanted to see what other options are out there for someone who loves people, likes to make a difference, and loves science. I found nursing.

Before heading to nursing school, I went to a women’s health NP for my routine Gyn care. Whenever I had an appointment with her, I felt heard and respected. I carried those experiences with me through nursing school, where my passion for women’s health grew as a nurse.

I then worked on a postpartum unit, helping parents navigate those first few days with or without their newborns. I wanted to continue my education by going back to school to become a nurse-midwife. That way, my care wasn’t limited to just those few days with my patients, but instead, I could continue caring for birthing people through their lifespan—and also have the opportunity to be one of the first people to meet their newborns. It’s pretty amazing.

What women’s care do you specialize in?

As a Certified Nurse-Midwife, I specialize in caring for birthing people before, during, and after pregnancy, including the labor and birth experience. But midwives can also provide routine Gyn care to our patients.

If you could eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

That would be a toss-up between cookies and blue crabs.

Where is your favorite place that you have traveled to?

My favorite place that I’ve traveled to is a special place, a very small island in Virginia: Kati Island. My family and I have been going there for many, many years, and we just love the small town atmosphere, the quiet beach, as well as being able to catch our own blue crabs. We can get great seafood there, which I always look forward to whenever we go.
