Rachel Simpson is a Certified Nurse-Midwife with the Midwifery Care Associates group at Simmonds, Martin & Helmbrecht of Advantia and is currently practicing at the Damascus and Frederick locations outside of Washington D.C. She brings extensive knowledge in healthcare to her role, with 10 years of experience as a Labor and Delivery nurse, as well as certifications as an RN in obstetrics and electronic fetal monitoring.
Rachel prioritizes providing evidence-based practices for her patients and ensuring informed consent. Patient education is a critical part of her care philosophy, which goes hand-in-hand with her desire to foster a shared decision-making process through respect and bodily autonomy between provider and patient.
What led you to become a Certified Nurse-Midwife?
As a labor and delivery nurse for over 10 years, I saw a lot of births with midwives, and I really enjoyed the shared decision-making process and the more personalized opportunities that midwife patients have. So, it was a pretty easy transition for me to go from nurse to midwife.
What women’s care do you specialize in?
As far as specialties and passions, I really enjoy being able to go through the pregnancy process with people, their partners, and their families as they expand their families. I’m also very passionate about postpartum mood disorders, so I really enjoy being able to talk to patients about that as well.
What did you want to be growing up?
Growing up, I wanted to do all sorts of things, usually centered around helping people. I wanted to be a nurse, a teacher, a hairstylist. I wanted to do it all! But, ultimately, it came back to my initial dream of wanting to be a nurse who helps moms and babies.
Where is your favorite place that you have traveled to?
Seven Mile Beach in Grand Cayman is definitely my favorite place that I’ve ever traveled. I went there on my honeymoon with my husband, and it had the most beautiful beaches that we’ve ever seen. It was just the most perfect time.
