Erin Etheridge-Bagley is a Certified Nurse-Midwife for Heartland Women’s Healthcare of Advantia who is currently practicing at the Marion and Carbondale locations. She brings more than 20 years of knowledge in healthcare to her role, with experience in midwifery, nursing in emergency rooms and intensive care, rural health, and teaching.
Erin offers person-centered and quality care for everyone, no matter the situation. She strives for patient autonomy and equal participation between the provider and the one being cared for, whether it’s adolescent care, midwifery care during pregnancy and post-partum, menopause care, trauma-informed care, or LGBTQIA+ care.
What led you to become a Certified Nurse-Midwife?
I joined the profession of midwifery because I had a very traumatic birth with my second child, and I was not a midwife at that point. I decided after that experience that I wanted to be part of the solution instead of just experiencing the outcomes; I decided that I wanted to be a change maker in the world of birthing, and that I wanted to give women an opportunity to have a birth experience that they can look back on and know that they were listened to, that their wishes were honored, but they were also in a very safe space to deliver their baby. That’s when I embarked on my journey to become a midwife.
What women’s care do you specialize in?
As a midwife, I’m passionate about safe prenatal care, the delivery of a healthy, happy baby, and a healthy, happy mother. However, I am very passionate about women’s gynecological care throughout the lifespan. So that’s helping young women decide what is going to be safe for them for contraception and talking about safe sexual practices. I’m very passionate about menopause care and women who are perimenopausal and of menopausal age; that has to do with their hormones, hormone replacement therapy, making sure they transition through that process as seamlessly as possible, and making sure that women throughout their life and care feel like they’re heard and their wishes and desires are listened to—and that we take them seriously when they come to us with any problems or concerns.
What did you want to be growing up?
When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a forensic pathologist. I was very interested in early civilizations and finding out what their health was and what they died from. I thought for sure that’s what I was going to be, and life took me in a very different direction!
Who has been the biggest influence on your life?
The biggest influence in my life is my mother. My mother made sacrifices for us when we were growing up to make sure she was there for us. We always felt like we had a home base and that we had somebody that we could always depend on. And then, when she got older and we all moved out, she followed her dream. We got to watch her go through college at the age of 50, become an RN, and work in hospice. She has just shown me resilience and what you can do when you put your mind to it, and to never give up on your dreams.
