Amy Olsson is a Certified Nurse-Midwife with Simmonds, Martin & Helmbrecht of Advantia and is currently practicing at the Frederick locations. Her over 15 years of experience in nursing and time spent as a Certified Nurse-Midwife allow her to provide personalized and thoughtful care for every patient.
What led you to become a midwife?
I was led to midwifery care after the birth of my first child at the age of 18. I remember holding my baby and thinking to myself, I want to be a part of change in birthing, and I want to help women have a positive and encouraging experience with their birth. I was already enrolled in nursing school at the time, and from there became a nurse, then a labor and delivery nurse for 18 years, and then a midwife. I find a lot of fulfillment in birthing babies and taking care of women throughout their pregnancies.
What women’s care do you specialize in?
Amy is available to assist patients with all care related to pregnancy and midwifery including health counseling, pregnancy confirmation, routine monitoring, and developing a personalized birth plan.
What fun fact should patients know about you?
I am a mom to eight kids whom I’ve raised in Frederick County for 26 years. My oldest is 30 and my youngest is 10. So, I’m pretty much the master of chaos. If I have a lot going on in the hospital at one time, it’s okay—I can handle it. It has given me the perspective of having big families and wanting to grow your family, so I feel like that has helped my job as well.
What is your favorite thing about being a midwife?
One of my favorite things about midwifery is patient education. I love talking to patients about all kinds of areas of parent care, postpartum care, newborn care, birth and what to expect. That’s my passion, and I love to bond with my patients. So bringing that baby back for that six-week postpartum visit and letting me give ’em a squeeze is all very important and very fun throughout all different times of their lives.
