What is your favorite food?
If I had to eat one food for the rest of my life, it would absolutely, positively, be pizza. It doesn’t matter what kind, I’m a pizza connoisseur. I actually probably eat it almost two to three times every week, so it would definitely be pizza.
What is your go-to karaoke song?
At karaoke night, it really depends on my mood and how I’m feeling. I’m actually a singer, so I have a very vast repertoire—it could be Party in the USA by Miley Cyrus, we could do a little Jazmine Sullivan, we could take it back in the day, we can do Broadway. It can really be anything with me. I’m actually known as a voice, so I’m usually known to just be singing everywhere I am.
What is the most daring thing you’ve ever done?
The most daring thing that I’ve ever done is cliff jumping in Jamaica at Rick’s Cafe. I was actually talked into it by my husband, and it’s probably something that I will not be doing again.
What led you to this profession in women’s healthcare?
It’s actually a very funny story. I was in undergrad nursing school when I saw my very first birth. I did feel very lightheaded, I felt like it was very unnatural. And at that point, I knew that labor and delivery was not going to be for me.
It wasn’t until after my first year of nursing in medical-surgical telemetry that I knew that it was not what I wanted to do. I thought I wanted to specialize in mother-baby or postpartum nursing, but the opportunity just did not arise. So, it happened to be that labor and delivery was the only position that was opening up. I figured I would give it a chance, and it was in labor and delivery where I fell in love with the birthing experience and the vulnerability of birthing people. It was my first time even encountering nurse midwives! I knew at that point that this was my purpose and that this was my passion.
What are your specialties in women’s health?
Early pregnancy loss care, preeclampsia, and labor management and support are a few of my specialties. My ultimate passion is just improving perinatal outcomes, so outcomes of moms and babies of black and brown women. Ultimately, my goal is to ensure that every person regardless of race, gender identity, geographic, economic status, that they are receiving the care that they deserve. I also have a deep passion for advocacy, patient education, and counseling.
