Blake Ferry is a Certified Nurse-Midwife for Heartland Women’s Healthcare of Advantia who is currently practicing at the Shiloh location in southern Illinois. He brings more than 10 years of experience in healthcare to his role, most recently earning his Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Cincinnati.
Blake empowers his patients by educating them on disease prevention throughout their lives with the ultimate goal of achieving healthy, autonomous living. His passion for improving the health and quality of life of his patients is evident throughout his interview, which you can read below.
What led you to become a Certified Nurse-Midwife?
I joined the profession when I was a labor and delivery nurse, and I noticed that certain patients wanted a less traditional medical model for their labor and delivery. Once I pulled the thread on that and realized that there was kind of a complementary style to labor in this midwifery path, I wanted to look into that and research that. I became a midwife so I could provide that for my community!
What women’s care do you specialize in?
I specialize in non-interventional care for pregnancy, labor, and delivery. But in addition to that, a passion of mine is health promotion. It’s been my experience that women who are healthy and feel healthy not only have a healthier pregnancy, but also a healthier delivery and life outside of being pregnant. Also, I think it’s a passion of mine that I want my patients to be at their healthiest, just so they can live life to the fullest.
What did you want to be growing up?
As a child of the nineties, I was heavily influenced by Steve Irwin. So, growing up, I wanted to study reptiles and amphibians just like he did, and that is technically called a herpetologist, or a scientist who studies reptiles and amphibians.
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
While I love Mexican food and I could eat that anytime, anywhere, I think the one meal I would say I could eat for the rest of my life is lasagna. I just love a good, hearty lasagna.
