Kim Pekin is a Certified Nurse-Midwife with the Midwifery Care Associates group at Simmonds, Martin & Helmbrecht of Advantia and is currently practicing at the Frederick location, outside of Washington, D.C. She brings nearly two decades of experience to her new role, having been a midwife since 2009. Kim worked as a home birth and birth center midwife for many years, and recently started serving patients in the hospital setting as well, helping them to have the birth that they want in the hospital. Earlier in her career, Kim founded two CABC-accredited freestanding birth centers in Virginia.

In her practice, Kim offers full-scope midwifery care throughout the patient’s life. She is most passionate about creating personalized birth experiences for her patients, whether that includes an epidural or an unmedicated labor. Her practice style incorporates evidence-based care with complementary modalities to support the individual needs of each patient.

What led you to become a Certified Nurse-Midwife?

I became a midwife because I had wonderful midwifery care for the last two of my babies, who were both born at home. The care that I had with my midwives really inspired me and made me want to try to provide the kind of experience that I had for other people; I felt like I was really in charge and really participated in all the decision-making when it came to my birth.

What women’s care do you specialize in?

I’m very passionate about informed choice and about helping people to be the healthiest person that they can be—and have the healthiest birth that they can have if they’re still having babies. I’m also passionate about menopause care, and I feel like that’s an area where midwives can really be there for women and help them walk through that part of their lives.

What did you want to be when you were younger?

I didn’t know about midwives when I was a kid. I thought I wanted to be an obstetrician, and my mom talked me out of it. She said I’d be on call all the time, and I would hate that, but I ended up being a midwife and being on call all the time, and I love it!

When I grew up, I went to college and became an accountant. That was my first career, and then I stayed home with my kids and raised them. I didn’t become a midwife until my forties. I’m just really enjoying this season of my life helping patients, and I really look forward to helping people at the Frederick location.

What women’s health services do you offer as a Certified Nurse-Midwife?

Kim’s work goes well beyond pregnancy and birth: she also provides comprehensive gynecologic services. This includes birth control counseling and perimenopause support, as well as caring for urinary incontinence, pelvic floor health, PCOS, and treating sexually transmitted infections. Her expertise and compassionate care support a wide range of women’s health issues.
