Joanna Ranelli is a dual Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP) dedicated to providing holistic, evidence-based, and person-centered reproductive and primary healthcare across the lifespan. Her clinical practice is grounded in trauma-informed care, shared decision-making, health equity, and respect for patient autonomy.
Joanna began her nursing career in Labor & Delivery, caring for families across the spectrum of physiologic, medically complex, and high-risk births. Her experience supporting laboring patients, combined with her diverse background as a certified doula, birth assistant, peer lactation counselor, and prenatal/postpartum yoga instructor, allows her to provide calm, supportive, and holistic care centered around each patient’s unique needs, values, and goals.
Her clinical interests include physiologic birth, prenatal and postpartum care, labor support, lactation and breastfeeding support, contraception counseling and management, gynecologic care, menopause care, reproductive health advocacy, and promoting positive birth experiences through shared decision-making and respectful care. She is trained in neonatal resuscitation, advanced fetal monitoring, IUD and Nexplanon insertion, comprehensive colposcopy through American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology, Spinning Babies®, and trauma-informed perinatal care. Joanna is especially passionate about creating inclusive and welcoming spaces where people feel safe, valued, and supported.
Joanna earned her Master of Science in Nurse-Midwifery and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner from Georgetown University, where she graduated with honors as a DC AHEC scholar and American College of Nurse Midwives scholarship recipient. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, summa cum laude, from George Mason University. Before entering healthcare, she received her Bachelor of Arts in Law and Society from American University and worked in federal public service, experience that strengthened her commitment to reproductive justice, advocacy, communication, and equitable access to care.
Joanna lives in the Northern Virginia area with her husband and two children. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, traveling, doing yoga, cooking, advocacy work, and creative projects.
Joanna joins Physicians & Midwives in early July and looks forward to serving our community.
