Scheduling Your Mammogram Visit
As part of the annual GYN visit, your provider will discuss your breast health history and perform a clinical breast exam. Based on this evaluation, the provider will determine whether a screening mammogram is the most appropriate imaging study for you.
If a screening mammogram is appropriate, we will perform it immediately following your appointment with the provider as is currently scheduled. However, if your provider determines that another imaging study would be more suitable, they will place an order for that specific study.
In most cases, the alternative study will need to be scheduled for another time, which our office will help you coordinate. The ideal time for breast imaging is during first two weeks of the menstrual cycle (applies to premenopausal patients only).
Breast ultrasound will be utilized as a first-line evaluation in patients under the age of 30. For patients over the age of 30, unless the ultrasound is specifically intended as a follow-up procedure for a previously identified abnormality, a mammogram must be performed first before conducting a diagnostic breast ultrasound.
