Mary Elizabeth Butts, MD, is an obstetrician and gynecologist at Heartland Women’s Health in Shiloh, Illinois. Originally from Tupelo, Mississippi, Dr. Butts grew up in a small-town community where relationships and a sense of connection were an important part of everyday life. That experience continues to shape the way she practices medicine and the value she places on getting to know her patients and building lasting relationships with them.
Dr. Butts attended Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, where she graduated cum laude with degrees in Biology and Religion. She went on to earn her medical degree from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. During medical school, she was actively involved in physician advocacy and health policy through the American Medical Association and was recognized with multiple honors for her leadership, academic achievement, and service.
She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, where she developed broad experience caring for women through pregnancy, childbirth, and the full spectrum of gynecologic care. During residency, she received several awards recognizing her work in obstetrics and clinical research.
After completing residency, Dr. Butts remained in Memphis and practiced general obstetrics and gynecology before relocating to St. Louis and joining Heartland Women’s Healthcare.
Dr. Butts enjoys caring for women throughout every stage of life and particularly values the relationships that develop through long-term obstetric and gynecologic care. Her approach combines evidence-based medicine with individualized care, recognizing that the right decision may look different for each patient.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Butts enjoys spending time with her fiancé, Jason. Together, they love traveling and hiking, exploring bookstores, and taking advantage of the many parks and outdoor activities throughout St. Louis.
